Football v Homophobia Month of Action
February marks both LGBT+ history month and the international campaign month of ‘Football v Homophobia’ (FvH). The Football Association of Wales and FAW Trust will be continuing to support the important FvH initiative which unities football in opposing homophobia and prejudice against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT+) people in football.

The Football Association of Wales and FAW Trust will be continuing to support the important FvH initiative which unities football in opposing homophobia and prejudice against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT+) people in football.

FvH enables people to take action against prejudice and discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity and expression in football, whilst celebrating and welcoming diversity across the game. This culminates in an international show of support in February to raise awareness of the issue and to join together in making a visible stand against prejudice and for inclusion.
FvH note that studies on homophobia in sport over the past ten years find that around 82% of respondents have witnessed or experienced homophobia in sport in the UK. Attitudes in Football are changing, but we all need to make sure that the language we use and the way we behave reflects this change.
To help support clubs across Welsh football on becoming LGBTQ+ Inclusive, the FAW and the FAW Trust will be hosting a panel discussion on the evening of Wednesday the 24th of February open to club officials at grassroots clubs.
This panel will discuss what an inclusive environment looks like at a grassroots club, identifying potential barriers for LGBT+ people in football on how a club can support LGBT+ players being open about their gender identity and sexuality in addition to what actions clubs could take to develop meaningful change.
The panel will include special guests:
- Sinead O'Rourke, Deeside Dragons & FvH Hero award nominee.
- Dr Sophie Cook, Vice-President of Bellevue FC
- Lou Englefield, Director of Pride Sports & Campaign Director at Football V Homophobia.
