Inclusive Coaching

adapting practices for individual abilities

Are the Club's coaches trained to deliver inclusively?

In addition to using inclusive language, the Club can provide adaptive/inclusive equipment that might be needed for some individuals to take part or adapt their practices to cater for individual needs and abilities.

How to adapt your sessions to prioritise inclusion and support specific needs:

  • First gain an understanding of the specific needs your players have.
  • Make sure your practices are inclusive and that you’re offering a safe, supportive environment.
  • Gain an understanding of neurodiversity to ensure that your sessions are appropriate for people with conditions such as ADHD and autism.
  • Ensure the equipment you use is colour-blind friendly. For example, red cones can disappear on green surfaces.
  • Develop your communication skills. The confidence and knowledge to communicate with people that have specific needs are crucial to delivering an inclusive session.

STEP framework

The STEP tool (Space, Task, Equipment, People) is a simple framework for making changes to help adapt and modify football activities to ensure all abilites are provided the right level of challenge and their needs are supported.

Changes in the way the activity is delivered can be made in one or more of the STEP areas so that all individuals can be included and achieve success.
