Religious and cultural inclusion

religious celebrations

Are you aware of the timing of religious celebrations that may impact some members of your Club?

Various religions will have beliefs as part of their practice that will require specific support for an individual to be able to participate in football while practising their religion.

Some of these might include:

  • Avoiding training or playing matches at times/dates that conflict with religious observation.
  • Providing a place or appropriate environment for prayer, observation or meditation.
  • Allowing players and Club officials to take breaks during training sessions and or games for religious observation or to break their fast is best practice.
  • Limiting or adjusting training time or the level of intensity during periods of fasting.
  • Providing private space in changing rooms.
  • Taking into consideration the use of sponsors or advertising logos on the Clubs kit that might contradict religious observation (e.g. alcohol, gambling or loan/credit companies).
  • Catering for specific dietary requirements (i.e Halal food)
  • Adjustments to uniform code (i.e allowing wearing a sports Hijab.)

Work with individuals at your Club to put in place provisions to support them practice their faith while still being able to fully participate in Clubs activities.

You can use the ‘FAW Diversity Calendar’ to find out when various religious celebrations and practices take place.
